Insider vs. Outsider

It is hard to determine what qualifies literature to be considered “authentic” or “diverse”. There are many stereotypes about the Native American Culture displayed throughout literature. One of the reasons for this is because there are not enough “insider” authors. As explained in the text, 98.5% of Native American literature is written by non Native American authors. One of the problems that “outsider” writers have is when they use stereotypes within their literature. Stereotypes are very close minded and as explained in Reese’s article, used within many famous stories including Disney’s Pocahontas. One can usually assume that an “insider’s” writing is authentic. However questions that I would like to explore in class is “How does a writer who is an “outsider” create their literature to be “authentic”?” This is a hard factor to determine and would like to go more in depth on the topic.
