Persons with Disabilities

Two class sessions ago my group was assigned to research the Schneider Family Book award. This award is an award for children’s literature about people with disabilities. I was glad to have received this topic to research. Since my major is Special Education and I also plan to do my final book talk on people with disabilities, the information I learned while researching the award will help me in the future. This award was created recently in 2004 and three awards are given per year. One of the books that have received the award was Becoming Naomi Leon which has been assigned for the class to read. Hopefully my knowledge gained from researching this award and the books will help me out during my book talk. Last class was very interesting when we compared the different picture books. My group’s picture book was called Sammy Wakes His Dad. We felt that this was not an appropriate book to have in a classroom library due to our answers from checklist developed by Joan Blaska & Evelyn Lynch. This picture book showed pity and did not necessarily promote a positive image of persons with disabilities. Many children however would be able to relate to this book. When comparing Sammy’s situation to another group’s picture book they were complete opposites. This further demonstrates how all families have different situations.
